So that you can Make a Difference in the community in a way that's meaningful to you, this year we encourage each employee to select a local nonprofit to receive their donation. If your donation is at least $50, you can either donate directly to United Way of Salt Lake or designate a local nonprofit of your choice and United Way will send them the funds on your behalf. The company match will still go to United Way of Salt Lake.
You will select your charity when you register for your bidder link. You may choose from a list of UWSL's current partners or add your own. To add a new charity you'll need to provide their name and local address. For a charity to be eligible for donations, they must meet two criteria:
If the charity you designate does not meet these criteria, United Way of Salt Lake will keep your donation for their own community initiatives.
Please contact Rebecca Sims (ext. 4165) if you have questions about charity selection.
You may choose to pay for your Making a Difference Week purchases via payroll deduction, cash, check, or credit card.
Deductions will begin on your Nov. 30 paycheck.
If you participated in the 2016 campaign and chose the maximum number of payroll deductions, those deductions will end on Nov. 15.
If the total of your purchases is less than $50, the total amount will be deducted in one (1) payroll deduction on your Nov. 30 paycheck.
If your purchases are greater than $50, you may choose to have the monies deducted in equal amounts spread across either 12 or 24 paychecks, beginning on your Nov. 30 paycheck. You will select this option when you register to get your bidder link.

Q. If I selected a specific Utah nonprofit instead of United Way of Salt Lake (UWSL), how will they get paid?
A. If you pay immediately (check or credit card), after processing from CHG Healthcare, UWSL will pay those gifts in a lump sum to the designated charity on the 15th of the current or following month, depending on how quickly CHG can process campaign results. These payments to designated charities can be as early as December 2017, but more than likely they will receive their gift in January 2018.
If you use payroll deduction, UWSL will pay these to the designated charity on the 15th of every month as they receive the payments from your payroll deduct from CHG. The number of pay periods you selected will determine how long it will take to fulfill your pledge to your designated charity.
Example: Jane Doe pledges $600 ($50 per month) during Making a Difference Week. UWSL receives the pledge information from CHG in late October 2017 and payroll deductions will begin November 30, 2017. CHG sends the money from payroll deductions to UWSL every pay period (twice a month). UWSL collects these donations and forwards them to your designated charity once a month.
UWSL will begin paying out/fulfilling the designations in December 2017. This will continue for the duration of the payroll deduction.
If you opted to have your gift deducted over a 12-month period, the last deduction will be November 15, 2018, also meaning the last payment will be made to UWSL in November 2018 and the last payment from UWSL to your designated charity will be in December 2018.
Q. Does 100 percent of my money go to the nonprofit, or are their administrative fees taken out first?
A. CHG is one of several Cornerstone Partners (companies) that underwrite the administrative fees so that 100 percent of employee donations go directly to their selected nonprofit.
Q. Is the ability to designate a charity new?
A. No. This process is not new to United Way. United Way allows people to designate their specific charities for donations. However, this is CHG’s first time to promote this company-wide.
Q. If I choose to donate entirely to UWSL, what am I supporting?
A. For the past ten years, UWSL has been leading a different model to support our community. Instead of funneling money to nonprofits separately, they bring governments, school districts, and agencies together in one location (healthcare, language classes, tax help, GED classes, food, safety, immunizations, after-school programs, etc.).
These facilities are called Community Schools and there are over forty across the Salt Lake valley. It’s like a one-stop-shop for many necessary services committed to help our community. United Way is the backbone, aligning the efforts of each of the above organizations to truly change the odds for families in our community.
Thank you for your charitable contribution through Making a Difference Week 2017!
The charities we support are not-for-profit tax-exempt organizations under Internal Revenue code section 501(c)(3). As such, your donation may be eligible for an IRS tax deduction.
IRS regulations state that the deductible amount of a charitable contribution is limited to the excess of any money contributed over and above the fair market value of goods or services received. The tax-deductible portion of your contribution is calculated as follows:
You may also deduct the full fair market value of any goods or services that you donate to a division/team basket.
Please consult your tax adviser regarding your contribution and its deductibility.
Thank you for Making a Difference in our community!
